Border IMPROVEMENTS AND Redesigns

Good Planting Is Not Just About Plants — It’s About Planning & DESIGN

A successful planting scheme is carefully considered to ensure the right plants are used in the right place. Thoughtful planning creates balance, structure, colour and seasonal interest, while responding to the soil, light and style of the garden. The result is a cohesive landscape that establishes well, matures beautifully and provides year-round enjoyment.

New Border to soften the Terrace that is also ecologically sensitive

This new border was designed to soften the terrace and bring the garden closer to the house. The planting has been carefully considered to include varieties that are generally resistant to deer and rabbits, with a gentle colour palette of purple, blue, white and soft pink.

The main structure comes from Stipa gigantea, an elegant evergreen grass with tall, arching stems and golden seed heads that catch the light beautifully in late summer. This is combined with Salvia ‘Amistad’, a late-flowering perennial that thrives in lighter, free-draining soil.

Groups of Echinacea ‘Magnus’ and Echinacea ‘White Swan’ provide long-lasting summer flowers, while Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ billows around the edges, softening the border and attracting pollinators.

The scheme has been designed to support wildlife, attracting bees, birds and insects, while creating a soft, naturalistic edge to the terrace.

Border IMPROVEMENTS AND Redesigns

A Border Redesign for a
north facing garden

This border is north facing but sheltered by two adjacent walls. It was a bare patch gathering weeds.

We put down lots of good quality mulch to enrich the soil and planted an evergreen hedge under the window using Viburnum Eve Price which flowers through the Winter and through into the Spring too.

In the foreground we grouped Eurphorbia purpurea to brighten the aspect and it looks stunning here with it's lime green flowers.

A lawn meets a curved garden border filled with small shrubs at the front which grow taller towards the right of the image.

A redesign of the sunny side

My clients wanted to make more of the sunny aspect to this part of the garden but didn't want to become a slave to gardening.

We kept many of the mature boundary planting and used low maintenance shrubs through the border for winter structure intersperced with herbaceous perennials for summer colour.

Here groups of  Cornus Midwinter Fire, their bright orange stems contrasting so well against darker foliage plants like Pittosporum Tom Thumb and heucheras.
